
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Your Toes Dry)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with steam and moisture. If you don’t get the setup right, you’re looking at short circuits or, worse, a nasty shock. Here is how we actually handle that.
Why IP55 Matters
You’ll see “IP55” on the spec sheet. In plain English? It means the unit can handle dust and low-pressure water sprays coming from any angle. We build these housings specifically to stop condensation from sneaking into the electrical terminals. See, if steam gets inside the chassis, it creates a little bridge for electricity to jump from the live wire to the metal shell. To stop that, we use heavy-duty sealed gaskets and cable entries that actually keep the moisture out.
Making Sure the Power Stays Where It Belongs
The real secret to reliability in a wet room is the insulation. We use high-temp ceramics and reinforced silicone seals right where the lamp connects. This stops something called “tracking.” That’s just a fancy way of saying moisture creates a carbon path across the insulator, which can lead to a failure. It’s a small detail, but it’s a huge deal. And please,**wire these into a dedicated RCD or GFCI circuit.**Even with a great IP55 seal, things happen. Maybe someone hits the unit with a harsh cleaning chemical or bumps it too hard. The RCD is your safety net. It trips the power instantly before anyone feels a thing.
The Heat Struggle
Here’s the tricky part: shortwave infrared lamps get incredibly hot. While those tight IP55 seals are great for keeping water out, they can accidentally trap heat inside. It’s a balancing act. If you seal it too tight without a way for the unit to breathe, you’ll basically cook the internal components and kill the lamp’s lifespan. One last tip: watch your mounting clearance. Don’t push the heater flush against a damp wall. If you do, moisture will just build up behind the unit, bypassing all that fancy front-facing protection we talked about. Give it some room to breathe.
