
Why we’re moving to IR Curing for Lead-Free Chips
For a long time, we just threw everything into convection ovens and hoped for the best. But things are changing. Between the push for “green” manufacturing and the strict rules around lead-free standards, those old ovens just aren’t cutting it anymore. That’s why we’ve shifted toward infrared (IR) technology. It gets rid of those nasty volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and keeps the cleanroom air actually clean. It’s just a better way to work.
How the heat actually works
Think about it this way: hot air is slow. It has to warm up the air, then the tray, then finally the part. IR is different. It uses electromagnetic radiation to send heatstraight into the substrate. No middleman. You hit your target temperature in seconds. This is a huge deal for lead-free solders. Those typically need higher melting points than the old leaded stuff. With IR, you get that intense, precise heat needed for a rock-solid bond without baking the rest of the PCB into a crisp.
The nitty-gritty of the build
We don’t cut corners on the housing. We use high-grade stainless steel because, in a semiconductor lab, even a tiny bit of outgassing or a stray particle can ruin a whole batch. That’s a nightmare nobody wants. The reflectors are where the real magic happens. We fab these with extreme precision. Why? Because if a reflector is off by just a couple of degrees, you end up with cold spots on your wafer. And here’s a pro tip: high energy density means things expand. Metal moves when it gets hot. We build our mounting brackets to breathe, so the lamps don’t just snap during a rapid heat cycle.
The trade-offs
Look, IR curing is the cleanest, most efficient way to dry. It saves energy and kills off the need for toxic solvents. But it’s not a “set it and forget it” kind of tool. Because the heat is so concentrated, your sensors have to be spot on. If your PID loop is sluggish, you might actually burn through your substrate before the system even realizes it needs to shut down. You’ve got to keep a close eye on the specs.
